It’s not unusual for an anthology to take its name from one of the stories in the collection. “Live Free or Undead” follows that pattern, but here’s the twist: The story by that name has not yet been written or even assigned.
Between now and March 30, 2010, writers are invited to submit stories based upon the title “Live Free or Undead.” Obviously the stories will feature the Live Free or Die state, its landmarks, locales and characteristics, but to be considered, they must also feature zombies.
Submit your most horrifically zombie-filled tale, set anywhere in New Hampshire, past, present or future, and it could be the one chosen to be immortalized as the title story in the first volume of New Hampshire Pulp Fiction. All stories submitted may appear on the “Live Free or Undead” Web site (with author’s permission).
For additional details or to submit stories, write Rick Broussard at nhpulpfiction@gmail.com.
Rick- Just curious; do authors all have to hail from NH? I have some friends in Mass. that might be interested in this, but wasn’t sure if NH residency was required. Thanks…
Residency is not required, but a writer should be familiar enough with the state to properly weave it into the story.
Rick:
As a former resident of NH I’m very interested in submitting. Where can I get specific guidelines inre format etc.

I think everything you need to know is contained in this site. Dig around and you’ll find it. Deadline is March 31 and submissions should be less than 8,000 words unless you write me first and sell me on a longer composition. Payment is $50 and a copy of the book, plus a small measure of fame as one of the writers, featured in the back of the book (photo and bio) and in New Hampshire Magazine. Write me at nhpulpfiction@gmail.com with any specific questions. –Rick
I dashed off a short story of sorts when I got home after reading about your ‘contest’ and it’s title is: WITCHES TREES but it is not heavy on dialogue or description, etc at this moment may not even qualify. Anyway, when I find out how to submit it, I shall do so,hoping I can find time and energy to do so. Anyway, thanks for your kind consideration in these matters. Yours in martial arts, HALFORD E. JONES
Could you clarify please: only stories aiming to be the title story must have zombies? Or must all submissions include zombies? And what is your definition of a zombie?
Kat,
Don’t let the zombie title confuse you. I’m open to any type of horror story. As you may have gathered from the name of the book (Live Free or Undead: Dark Tales from the Granite State) the stories need to be rooted in New Hampshire. There are many ways to do that, but I expect the connections to be authentic and a sense of place and character (or characters) of the state to be evident.
-Rick
Will try to finish what I have started thus far. Thanks for the information and so forth. Halford
Hi Rick,
I submitted a manuscript,’Goodbye Sweet Love’ about March 24,2010 by mail to the address given in the Publication Specs. I never did receive a confirmation and when I e-mailed my inquiry earlier today it appeard none would be forth coming without a subscription to some unheard of web site. What’s up with this responce?
